An encounter with freedom in the Apennine Mountains
La Chiave, The key we want to share
After years in the bustle of Amsterdam, we’ve found our golden dream, our key to peace and happiness. And we want to share it with you. Every morning we wake up looking forward to a day where we can meet new people, share the magic of this perfect mix of culture, food, history and outdoors living and feel truly alive.
We’ve found the place to meet new people, share new experiences and where we feel truly at home. Where our “usual” is no longer habitual, but where we feel alive again.
Near the two wonderful cities of Bologna and Florence, but far from the hectic pace, our home is surrounded by the Italy we love and cherish. The place where we rediscovered ourselves and can really be together.
We love the delicious wining and dining and we enjoy having fun just as much as the peace and quiet. Sharing the magic of this place with our guests completes our happiness.
La Chiave was built in the 19th century as a farmhouse complete with a place for animals and a cold room for the preserves and hams. It has now been renovated and has three guestrooms. We have two furnished, comfortable tents in our garden for glampers, as well as a pool. Every mornings we serve a Continental breakfast in the welcoming cantina (cellar). In the cantina, which is open all the time, you will find games and information on outings and activities you’ll ever need.
The region offers a wide range of opportunities for hiking and cycling, including the Via degli Dei (“Path of the Gods”) a 130 km ancient route. Two cities of culture, Bologna (30 min.) and Firenze (50 min.) are nearby and readily accessible by car as well as by public transport. If you can’t make up your mind, we’d love to give you more advice and share other ideas for daytrips and shorter outings.
Three times a week (tuesday, thursday and sunday) we invite you to join us for ‘la cena’, dinner outdoors served in our garden with views onto the Apennine Mountains
Whether it is relaxing by the pool or a day out on a trip, there is plenty to keep you occupied for weeks at a time.
La Chiave is the key. Our doors are open. Everybody is heartily welcomed.

What would you like? We have information, maps and brochures on many fun, crazy, interesting, and exciting things to do. But we’d prefer to tell you about it ourselves. For the benefit of all you Google addicts here are some examples:
- Rochetta Mattei (a crazy castle. Is it a stage setting? A folly?)
- Castiglione dei Pepoli (a medieval town)
- Marzabotto (an ancient Etruscan archaeological site and museum)
- Monte Sole (nature reserve, beautiful now but scene to a gruesome massacre in the Second World War)
Cycling and Hiking
The area is blessed with many hiking trails (cantieri) among which:
- The Via degli Dei (the Path of the Gods) between Bologna and Florence
- The ‘Strada della lana e della seta’ (the road of wool and silk) between Bologna and Prato
- The Flaminia Militare The ancient Roman road, where in parts the original road can still be seen.
Parts of these routes can be walked as ‘single day’ hikes.
E-bikes can be rented nearby and there is many a beautiful trail to be explored.
For the cyclist with mountain legs the area is heaven. The Giro d’Italia passed through here last year.
Apart from Bologna and Florence, Modena (with its famous vinegar production, the Ferrari and Bugatti museums and an incredibly beautiful city centre) and Prato are more than worth a visit. The region between Bologna and Modena boasts some of the best wineries in the world and the circuit of Monza with its autodromo is there for the racing enthusiasts. And there is so much more. Let us tell you about it.
